Two men on the FBI terror watch list have been arrested after trying to enter the US from Mexico amid the surge in migrants crossing the border.
The men, both believed to be Yemenis, were arrested in separate incidents in January and last month, the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency said yesterday.
A group Republican politicians who recently visited the border in El Paso, Texas, said at the time that agency officials had reported people of Middle Eastern origin attempting to enter the US along with thousands of central American migrants.
The politicians criticised President Biden for easing restrictions put in place by Donald Trump. The number of border crossings have reached a 20 year high since the new administration took charge, and many of those making the crossing are unaccompanied children.
Joe Biden declared open borders and now terrorists are trying to take advantage, Republican senator, Ted Cruz, said last night.
Biden insists that the US has an obligation to process immigration claims on its side of the border.
One of the men, aged 33, was arrested on January 29 after allegedly attempting to cross the border illegally near Calexico in California, the agency said.
Border agents found a mobile phone SIM card located beneath the insole of his shoe.
The second man, aged 26, was arrested on March 30 in the same area.
