UK-Northern Ireland Dungiven: Viable pipe bomb found during security alert

Homes were evacuated after a suspicious object was discovered in Ard Na Smoll in Dungiven on Sunday.

Police said the alert was now over and residents have returned to their homes.

Inspector Stephen McCafferty said it was a "completely reckless" act to leave a device in a residential area, and it showed "no regard" for the people who lived there.

The "viable pipe bomb-type device" was found outside a property at about 10.45 BST.

It has been examined by Army bomb disposal experts and taken away for further investigations.

SDLP assembly member Cara Hunter said she had spoken to some residents and up to 50 homes have been affected.

She added many of the residents had young families and it was "disgraceful" their lives had been disrupted.

She said the "chaos of families being forced from their homes" was the last thing they needed on a Sunday morning.

Police are appealing for information.
