Hungarian Minister Urges UN to Boost Counter-Terrorism Investment

In a forthright address during his visit to New York, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, called for the United Nations to amplify its investment in counter-terrorism initiatives. Lamenting the UN's historical treatment of counter-terrorism as a secondary concern, Szijjártó emphasized the urgent need for change, echoing the organization's recent move to incorporate counter-terrorism financing into its central budget.

Szijjártó underscored Hungary's significant role in global counter-terrorism efforts, noting that the second-largest unit of the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism operates from Budapest. He expressed optimism that the UN's recent shift in prioritizing counter-terrorism financing would help curb the menace of terrorism worldwide.

The Hungarian Foreign Minister also highlighted the alarming link between terrorism and illegal migration, describing it as a 'vicious circle' where terrorism drives migration, and terrorist organizations exploit these migration waves. Szijjártó emphasized that controlling illegal migration could play a critical role in reducing the threat of terrorism.

A Plea for United Nations Leadership

In his meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Szijjártó stressed the UN's crucial leadership role in counter-terrorism and peacekeeping efforts. However, he did not shy away from criticizing the international response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, labeling the European strategy a 'complete failure' and expressing concerns about its continuation.

Szijjártó also addressed the rising concerns of anti-Semitism in Western Europe and the US, attributing its escalation to illegal migration. He asserted that Hungary, with its zero-tolerance policy, remains the safest country for Jewish communities.

During his visit, the Hungarian Minister also met with US Republican politicians who support Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's policies. He concluded his remarks by commenting on the Hungarian opposition, claiming it is led by the US ambassador to Budapest.
