Leeds man to appear in court after 'stirring up racial hatred'

A Leeds man will appear in court today charged with stirring up racial hated following disorder in the city.

Jordan Parlour, 28, has been charged with using threatening words or behaviour threatening to stir up racial hatred. The Crown Prosecution Service [CPS] says the charges relate to alleged Facebook posts made between August 1 and August 5 that were in connection with the violent public disorder across the UK.

He is due to appear at Leeds Magistrates' Court on Tuesday. Mr Parlour is among a number of people across the country appearing in court today charged with similar offences as disorder raged in different towns and cities over the weekend.

The disorder broke out in the wake of a knife attack in Southport last week which left three young girls dead and others injured. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has said the courts are on "standby" to ensure "swift justice."

Nick Price, Director of Legal Services at the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “We have authorised West Yorkshire Police to charge Jordan Parlour, 28, with using threatening words or behaviour intending to stir up racial hatred. The charge relates to alleged Facebook posts between 1 August and 5 August in connection with the violent public disorder across the UK.

“It is extremely important there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”
