US - Nine Phoenix Officers Wounded After Suspect Uses Baby As Bait For Ambush
Phoenix, AZ – Nine Phoenix police officers were wounded on Friday morning while responding to a report of a shooting that led to an hours-long standoff on the south side of the city.
Phoenix police said the incident occurred just after 2 a.m. on Feb. 11 on 54th Avenue between Lower Buckeye and Broadway roads, KTVK reported.
Phoenix Police Sergeant Andy Williams said someone called 911 and reported that a woman had been shot.
The first officer to arrive on the scene was ambushed, KTVK reported.
“He was actually invited in by the suspect,” Sgt. Williams explained. “As he approached the doorway, the suspect ambushed him with a gun and shot him several times.”
Although the officer was shot multiple times, he was able to get himself out of the line of fire, KTVK reported.
Sgt. Williams said backup arrived a short time later and the officer was transported to a nearby hospital.
The responding officers surrounded the house and ordered the occupants to come outside, KTVK reported.
That was when a man inside the home opened the front door and placed a baby in a carrier on the front porch next to a backpack that appeared to be a diaper bag.
In a video captured of the moment, it appeared the man followed police commands and put his hands over his head and walked backwards toward officers after he set the baby on the front steps.
